Smith was last seen at 11:26 p.m. on September 2, 1998, after her shift at Gulfport Memorial Hospital. Smith called her mother from the parking lot of the hospital to check on her children. She got into her black 4-door 1997 Mitsubishi Gallant and drove away.
Smith planned to stop at the Sav-A-Center and pick up some items for her grandfather but there is no evidence she made it there that night. She did not make it home that night.
On October 29, nearly 2 months after her disappearance, her car was found backed into a parking spot at the Southern Pines Apartments on St. Charles Street in Gulfport, Mississippi. No one nearby claimed to have seen who abandoned the car. Evidence was collected from the vehicle for further testing.
Smith and her ex-boyfriend and father of her children, Tim Bryant, had recently separated in the weeks prior to her disappearance. She left with the kids and moved in with her mother and grandfather. Bryant is considered a person of interest. Authorities say there is little evidence; however, her case is classified as a possible homicide.
