Neely was last seen around 7:30 a.m. standing by his truck at Panther Swamp Wildlife Refuge on October 25, 1996. He was at Panther Swamp to go squirrel hunting with a friend. He told his friend to go ahead in the woods while he finished getting his hunting gear situated and he would meet up with him. His friend went ahead into the woods but Neely never showed up in the woods. The friend went back to the truck at the time the two men had agreed upon prior to the hunt but Neely wasn’t there. The friend blew the horn several times but Neely did not return. He looked around for Neely for a bit, finding no sign, and called the police.

An extensive search was performed in the area Neely was last seen but he was never located. Neely’s children aid he had been hunting all of his life and was extremely safe and cautious. If he was safe and able, he would have been back to the truck at the agreed-upon time.

Neely’s hunting partner was given and passed a polygraph in regards to Neely’s disappearance. A man from the area told several people that he had killed Neely but has since passed away. Neely has never been seen or heard from again. His case remains unsolved at this time.
