Gates was last known to be living at a fishing camp owned by his parents on River Road in the Orange Grove area of Gulfport, Mississippi. He frequently walked along O’Neal Road and John Ross Road.
Gates cut off all ties with family and friends possibly due to an emotional breakdown.
A rumor was heard that someone killed Gates to assume his identity, buried him by the Biloxi River, and then left the state. His social security number was used in New Mexico after his disappearance.
