case details:

Hegwood was last seen in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on March 2, 1980. He had a date planned for 9:00 p.m. that evening. He went to the bank and then purchased flowers for the date but never arrived at the date he had planned for that evening. His roommates came home that evening and reported that the front door of their apartment was open and Hegwood was nowhere to be found.

The same night of Hegwood’s disappearance, a vehicle matching Hegwood’s was involved in a hit-and-run accident. The next morning, Hegwood’s vehicle was found abandoned on Short Katie Street in downtown Hattiesburg. Police said that there was a muddy handprint found on the car but did not disclose if there was damage due to a wreck. It is unclear if Hegwood is believed to be the drive in the hit-and-run accident.

6 months after his disappearance , Hegwood’s half-brother whom he had never met was killed in a police shootout in Ontario, Canada. He was carrying Hegwood’s license at the time of his death.

Authorities do not believe that he is responsible for Hegwood’s disappearance but believe that he somehow stole Hegwood’s identification prior to his disappearance.

Hegwood’s case remains unsolved at this time.
